I stepped out of my everyday hustle and bustle to live on an island for 2 months to prepare a Music Festival in a place where I knew no one. Gili Air is an island 4 hours by speed boat from Bali, where there are no motorized vehicles and no police. I had to put aside 1st world notions that I could show up, pay for a permit and commence to invite everyone to the party. Rather, on the island, Tribal rules still held strong and without first meeting the heads of the island and their families, no Gili Dub Club event was going to happen.
I was blessed to have a solid partner in this venture, Iqbal manager of Jakarta based group Yella Sky Sound System. It is not enough to just know a language to communicate, but to understand the nuances of culture, manners and respect. Iqbal handled this and took the time to teach me along the way. Nothing would have been possible without first earning the trust of locals and working with them. Everything from heading to a very busy market in Lombok to buy ingredients to make Jerk Chicken for the party, to working out the logistics of transporting 200 people by speed boat to Gili Island. Our venue partner, Pura Vida, is run by a couple from Barcelona that left everything they knew to discover another side to life.
Everything was set and the international people arrived for #GiliDubClub. Each year it gets better than the last. It amazes me how powerful it is to create family out of strangers, and how this can reverberate for many years to come. Throw a party, sell some drinks and you have some money in your pocket to last you a few weeks. Throw a Reggae Family Reunion on an island, and you probably have a friend in a foreign land that can share with you their culture, perspectives and successes. In our hyper paced world, sometimes it really takes a power outage on an island to get you to sit down and really talk to one another. I got to learn new sides of people I've known for years, and appreciated them just that much more.
See you again next year Dub Clubbers. I look forward to discovering a new destination with you, and taking the time to get to know one another a little bit more. Together, good vibes can grow.
