It started with me looking for a booking for my friends Suns of Dub. I couldn't find one as Singapore promoters and venues didn't want to take a chance on a first time act in Asia. To top it all off, a Reggae & Dub Act out of Jamaica. Once I was done complaining about how it was lame that no one would give such great artists a chance, and how there was such a lack of a Dub & Reggae scene - I realized the only way it would happen is if I put some muscle into it. With the support of some friends, DJ Reiki and local Singapore Soundsystem Dub Skank'in Hifi we banded together to create a home for Dub, Reggae, Dancehall and Bass Music culture here in the Lion City. We named this new home, the Singapura Dub Club.
7 months later, we have had artists from Jamaica, Trinidad, China, Japan, Spain and Mexico all debut at Singapura Dub Club. This month we see one of the pioneers of UK Dancehall and Dubplate Champion, Tippa Irie in Singapore for the first time, alongside Diggy Dang of India's first Soundsystem Reggae Rajahs. Even more close to my heart, we have Singapore's own Kiat, a creative director, producer and DJ I have long admired who broke ground for base music culture here in South East Asia, joining this month's Dub Club. When I look at the great minds that will be in the same room on Feb 20 at Artistry, I am overwhelmed by the possibilities of not only artists coming together, but Pioneers coming together. Tippa Irie, Diggy Dang and Kiat spearheaded their brand of Dub, Reggae and Bass movements in their respective countries. Now the tradition of Singapura Dub Club, grows to higher heights to celebrate bravery, innovation and originality through the music and the people. Singapore is a nation of great minds, and paired with the positive messages of Reggae music, the Lion City may open new gateways for a Rockers movement in Asia. See you Feb 20 Singapura Dub Club @Artistry 17 Jalan Pinang, Singapura.
