A couple years ago, a friend put me on to a group called AM444 and I fell in love with the smooth vocals singing poetics in Chinese over heavy down tempo riddims. I found out that the vocalist was a singer named Chacha from Shanghai. A part of Uprooted Sunshine Sound System, she frequently sang over Reggae with the occasional 16 bar rap.
On a recent tour in China, I was adamant to meet Chacha. Her manager, Drunk Monk also turned out to be a prolific DJ and co-founder of China's first Hiphop, Reggae and Bass music venues "The Shelter". I sat down with them in Shanghai to speak about music, life and future movements, finding out that neither had brought their talents to Singapore before. Invitations were made, and I am thrilled that both Chacha and Drunk Monk will be making their debuts at Singapura Dub Club Ocotober 26. 2014.
Meeting ChaCha + Drunk Monk at Shanghai's "Soul Sundays" with Drunk Monk rocking Irie Sunday Tshirt (Manila) and inviting them to play Singapura Dub Club - the last Sunday of each month. #Sunday
One of China’s most sought after experimental artist, ChaCha will be performing an intimate showcase for the first time in Singapore at Singapura Dub Club @ Artistry OCT 26. The Guizhou born Singer and emcee lends her smooth vocals to everything from Reggae to Hiphop to Bass heavy electronic music. ChaCha as recorded with the likes of Kode9, Clive Chin (VP Records),Jahtari, Desto and Jimi Tenor, as well as her AM444 project alongside producer JaySoul. ChaCha was the first ever mainland Chinese participant at the Redbull Music Academy 2011 in Madrid and has showcased at Rototom Sunsplash in Spain, Sakifo Festival on Reunion Island and Worldtronics Festival in Berlin. International music audiences are anticipating her upcoming solo project Faded Ghost.
Drunk Monk, one half of the founding members of The Shelter, one of the first institutions for Hiphop, Reggae and Electronic Music in China. Drunk Monk founded the soundsystem Uprooted Sunshine, and spearheaded the collective by touring with the likes of Clive Chin around China. His Sub-Culture nights have become notorious in Shanghai where dub step and bass heavy, darker music have found a home.SmartShanghai.com notes “DJ Drunk Monk is both years ahead of anyone here on the new music and also has a deep knowledge of rare gems...playing some unforgettable sets at The Shelter”.
